Even though it’s just a small village in the mountains, there are many reasons to visit this sleepy town. It’s famous among Taiwanese because the Old Pingxi Railway stops here, but it’s world famous for the beautiful Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival. A lazy afternoon spent strolling the old street and around the train tracks is a great way to relax and escape busy Taipei. You could spend the whole day exploring Pingxi and Jingtong, then spend the evening in Jiufen for a great weekend.
There are also beautiful day hikes all around Pingxi, but be sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes because the trails scurry across many rocks and uneven places and can be very slippery when wet. The entrance to Xiaozishan is closest to the town, but there are about a dozen others in the vicinity.
