If you are fortunate enough to be making the journey from Hualien to Taitung (or vice versa) you will have the option of going along the stunning coastal route or the equally spectacular rift valley route. They really are both that good, with very different sights on each.
Flowers are a big theme in the rift valley, towards the end of summer daylilys bloom throughout the valley, and in winter the rapeseed flowers take over and paint the hills yellow again. Sixty Stone Mountain is probably the best place to view these, but you will see them in smaller quantities up and down the valley. Thrill seekers have no shortage of options paragliding at Mingli in the north, or Gaotai in the south as well as white water rafting at Ruisui.
If that sounds too tiring, you might enjoy prefer to enjoy a hot spring at Ruisui or Wanrong, or have a relaxing walk at one of the forest recreation areas (Chinan and Fuyuan). Those looking for a longer walk can head to the sublime Walami Trail, or hike up to a gorgeous alpine lake on the Southern Cross Island Highway.
